DuChemin assignment #4 – Perspective

The goal here is to use perspective and lines to show depth. We see 3D, photos are 2D. What we see is often lost in the translation. I used our recent trip to San Francisco to work on this assignment. A lot of these shots are with my 10-22mm lens. Wide lenses exaggerate perspective. This was a fun assignment in a fun city. David duChemin assignment #3

This assignment involves taking photos of one your favorite subjects and seeking a different point of view, or a different way of telling the story. One of my favorite photos is one I took a while ago. I used Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro in post processing on this one. I was surprised and thrilled when one of the chief engineers at Nik Software commented on this photo. I’m proud of this one.

The Christus

This statue is at a local cemetery watching over many graves. You don’t really get that from this image. So I decided to use this one as my base and try to tell the story of this statue more completely using different points of view. Here’s what I came up with. I noticed that in some of the pics the statue looks huge and ominous, while in others it looks really small. All depends on the point of view. This was a really fun and helpful exercise. Assignment #2 is to go out for an hour with only one lens and look for images that show contrast. Color, light, subject contrast. I went out with my daughter Chelsea and gave her the same assignment. She got some good stuff. I took my 50 mm 1.4 lens. Here’s what I got.

My interest in taking photographs has lately waned a bit, unfortunately. Our recent improvement in our website has helped a lot. I’ve also been doing the exercises from David duChemin’s first e-book “10: Ten ways to improve your photography. None of them involve buying gear.” Buy it here if you’re interested. Great little book.

The first exercise was to go out for an hour and force myself to be more selective. He suggested coming back with only 3 images that I thought would be worthy of hanging on my wall. It was a really helpful exercise. I’m not sure I’d hang these up but here are my three.
