Also from Alcatraz. Alcatraz was the American version of Chateau d’if. It was the last stop for the worst of the worst in the US federal prison system. It’s closing coincided with a philosophical shift in the prison system from punishment to rehabilitation. Having visited there, I can think of no better word to describe the place… punishment.

Taken from a recent tour of Alcatraz. Those windows look out into the San Francisco bay and the city beyond. Legend has it that on a windy night when the wind blew toward the prison, prisoners could hear music and laughter from parties in the city as they sat in their cells. Freedom you could taste, but couldn’t touch.
